Go Ask Alice @ The White Dove Rockotel
Shot on 35mm film in Woodstock, NY, and loosely inspired by the book of the same name, these are a few images and the story behind ‘Go ask Alice’ by Creative Director, Makeup Artist, DJ & photographer, Kristin Gallegos
The book is about a teen girl in the 60’s who runs away from home and gets caught up in the hippie drug scene. The title is also taken from the song, ‘White Rabbit’ by Jefferson Airplane, which uses Alice in Wonderland as a metaphor for a drug experience. My story has the feel of the flower power 60’s psychedelic experience. Like the Summer of Love in 1967 or Woodstock in 1969. It feels a little dark at times, but generally has a happy, light and carefree feel to it.
Amanda, the model & Ashley, the makeup artist are good friends of mine. We drove up to Woodstock from NYC and stayed at ‘The White Dove Rockotel’ where we also shot it. We shot over the course of two days & one night. ‘The White Dove’ is incredible! It is themed on the original 1969 Woodstock concert. Each suite is specifically themed to an artist that played the concert. We stayed in & shot in the Janis Joplin ‘Heart’ room & also shot a little in the Jimi Hendrix ‘Experience’ room. We immersed ourselves in the music of the time, which is one of my favourite eras and genres of music. We let that inspire the mood of the shoot. It was a truly magical experience!
